[G]Once upon a time in Arkansas,
An [D]old man sat in his little cabin door,
And [G]Fiddled at a tune that he liked to hear,
A [G]jolly old [C]tune that he [D]played by [G]ear.
It was [G]raining [C]hard, but the[G]fiddler didn't [D]care,
He [G]sawed a- [D]way at the [G]popular [D]air,
Tho' his [G]roof tree [C]leaked like a [G]water- [D]fall,
that [G]didn't seem to [C]bother the [D]man at [G]all.
[G]A Traveler was riding by that day,
And [D]stopped to hear him a practicing away;
The [G]cabin was afloat and his feet were wet,
But [G]still the old [C]man didn't [D]seem to [G]fret.
So the [G]Stranger [C]said, "Now the [G]way it seems to [D]me,
you had [G]better mend your [D]roof" [G]said [D]he.
But the [G]old man [C]said, as he [G]played a-[D]way,
"I [G]couldn't mend it [C]now it's a [D]rain-y [G]day."
The [G]Traveler replied: "That's all quite true,
But [D]this I think is the thing for you to do;
Get [G]busy on a day that's fair and bright,
Then [G]patch the old [C]roof till it's [D]good and [G]tight."
But the [G]old man [C]kept a [G]playing at his [D]reel,
And [G]tapped the [D]ground with his [G]leathery [D]heel:
"Get [G]along," said [C]he, "for you [G]give me a [D]pain:
my [G]cabin never [C]leaks when it[D]doesn't [G]rain."
